Helen Grant, Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald and Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Girls’ Education

As a British African woman in politics, I am proud to have been involved in campaigns which give women, particularly those from diverse and underprivileged backgrounds, opportunities to achieve their potential.

Earlier this year I was appointed by the Prime Minister as his Special Envoy for Girls’ Education.  My role is to champion Boris Johnson’s message that providing every girl on the planet with 12 years of high-quality education is one of the best ways of tackling many of the world’s most serious problems; such as poverty, inequality and climate change.  The empowerment of women and girls across the globe, with skills and knowledge, can be transformational in levelling-up society, boosting incomes and developing economies and nations.

I am also very proud to be a member of the most diverse UK Parliament in history and I will continue to play my part in helping to increase diversity within the Conservative Party. We have made great strides in recent years but there is no room for complacency and our foot must remain firmly on the proverbial pedal. It is so important that our political representatives truly reflect the individuals and communities whom we are elected to serve
